STEERING COLUMN KNOCKING NOISE OR VIBRATION
PURPOSE
A knocking noise and/or vibration at the steering column may be heard or felt when driving on rough roads. This condition may be caused by:

Damaged tie rod, idler arm or Pitman arm
^
Incorrect input shaft free play in the steering gear box
^
Loose bearing in the lower portion of the steering column
Follow the diagnosis chart in this bulletin for appropriate repair procedures for affected vehicles.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1994-96 Montero models produced before 11/95.
Improved steering columns and steering gear boxes are installed during production on models produced after 11/95.
