PURPOSE
This bulletin contains tire chain usage recommendations for 1996 cars and trucks.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
All 1996 model cars and trucks.
PRECAUTIONS WHEN BUYING AND INSTALLING TIRE CHAINS
Caution!
Some vehicles cannot use tire chains. These are:

3000GT - tire chains may not be used on any 3000GT with factory-equipment wheels and tires. However, except for VR4, if all four original wheels
are replaced with smaller 15x6JJ steel wheels with 205/65R15 tires, then cable chains may be used, but only on the front wheels.
^
Galant LS and ES with Premium Package - these cars, equipped with cast aluminum alloy wheels and low-profile tires, may not be fitted with tire
chains.
^
Eclipse GS, GS-TURBO, AND GSX - tire chains may not be used on these models.
Tire chains may be used on some 1996 model cars and trucks. But in those cases where chains may be used, they must be the style known as "cable
chains" purchased in a package labeled with a statement that the chains meet SAE class "S" clearance specifications. This is because all 1996 vehicles
have restricted wheel clearances. "Cable chains" labeled with SAE clearance classification "S" are designed to operate within these limited clearances.
Link-type chains and some other designs of traction devices do not meet the SAE class "S" clearance specifications and cannot be recommended for use.
Other cautions to observe when installing chains are:

Be sure they are the proper size for the tires.

Remove wheel covers when installing.

Tighten chains as tightly as possible.

Use chains only when absolutely necessary. Stay under 30 mph.

If chains strike vehicle body or chassis, stop and re-tighten them.
^
Do not use tire chains with the compact spare wheel. They will be too large and may damage the wheel or come off. On a front wheel drive vehicle, if
a front tire goes flat while using tire chains, first replace a rear wheel with the compact spare and then use the removed rear wheel on the front.
