MIL ON/MISFIRE DTCS/ENGINE KNOCK
PURPOSE
Diagnostic Trouble Codes related to misfire (DTC P0300, P0302, P0304, P0306) may set, and/or the MIL may come on due to welding debris from the
exhaust pipe/catalytic converter assembly entering the engine. The customer may also complain of intermittent engine knocking noise. This bulletin
describes how to diagnose and repair this condition.
Improved exhaust pipe/catalytic converter assemblies have been installed on models produced since 6/1/98, and are now available as replacement parts
to correct this condition. See "PARTS INFORMATION" section of this bulletin. The part number is unchanged.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1997-98 Montero Sport with V6 engine and California/NLEV-emissions produced before 6/1/98
NOTE:
California/NLEV-emissions vehicles are sold in some northeastern states. Check the underhood emissions label.
PROCEDURE
1.
Verify the symptoms with the customer. Ask if any unusual engine noise has been heard.
2.
Connect the MUT-II scan tool and check for DTCs.
3.
If any misfire DTCs are set, remove the spark plugs on the left bank and carefully inspect the piston tops for damage.
a.
If no damage is observed, go to Step 4.
b.
If any damage is observed on the piston top(s), further engine disassembly may be required to determine the extent of damage. Repair or
replace appropriate engine components as necessary. Then go to Step 4.
4.
Replace the left side catalytic converter front pipe assembly.
