Steering - Column Rattle/Steering Wheel Vibration
NO: TSB-99-37A-001
DATE: March, 1999
MODEL: 1997-99 Montero Sport
SUBJECT:
STEERING COLUMN RATTLE/STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION AT LOW SPEEDS
PURPOSE
When driving on rough roads at low speeds, a rattling noise may be heard from the steering column area and/or a slight vibration may be felt in the
steering wheel.
To eliminate the rattling noise and/or vibration, install a new, improved intermediate steering shaft. The new intermediate shafts have a rubber coupling
added to dampen noise and vibration. The noise and vibration is also affected by high mileage and by worn tires. The new intermediate shaft is most
effective on vehicles with mileage under 5,000 miles and good condition tires. The new steering shaft may not be as effective on vehicles with higher
mileage and/or worn tires.
If the rattling noise continues after installing the new intermediate shaft, replace the steering column.
^
Vehicles produced after 1/26/98 (VIN WP027186) have improved steering column upper and lower bearings to prevent steering column rattle and
vibration.
^
Vehicles produced after 10/29/98 (VIN XP028706) have the improved intermediate steering shaft.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1997-99 Montero Sport models produced before 10/29/98
PROCEDURE
1.
Replace the intermediate steering shaft if the vehicle VIN is below VIN XP028706. Refer to Group 37A Steering in the appropriate service
manual.
CAUTION
Before removing the air bag module, refer to Group 52B, Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). When removing and installing the steering wheel,
do not bump it against the air bag module.
