Tie Rod End: Testing and Inspection
Ball Joint Breakaway Torque Check
Required Special Tools: MB990326: Preload Socket.
MB990635 or MB991113: Steering Linkage Puller.
WARNING: Support special tool MB990635 or MB991113 with a cord, etc. to prevent it from coming off.
NOTE: Only loosen the tie rod end mounting nut; but do not remove it from the ball joint.
1. Use special tool MB990635 or MB991113 to disconnect the ball joint.
2. Move the ball joint stud several times and install the nut on stud. Measure ball joint breakaway torque with special tool MB990326.
Standard value: 3.0 Nm (27 inch lbs.)
3. When the breakaway torque exceeds the standard value, replace the tie rod end.
4. When the breakaway torque is under the standard value, check ball joint for end play or ratcheting. If none of these, the ball joint is still
serviceable.
5. Tighten the nut to the specified torque and install a new cotter pin.
Tightening torque: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
