PCM REPROGRAMMING FOR 2-3 SHIFT FLARE

This bulletin supercedes TSB-01-23-007, issued March, 2001, to correct ROM pack database numbers, MUT-II screen representations and displays.

PURPOSE

Some affected vehicles may experience a single shift flare when upshifting from 2nd to 3rd gear after warm engine restart. This is caused by incorrect
PCM software parameters which cause a delay in the clutch timing. Reprogramming the PCM as described in this bulletin will change the clutch timing
and eliminate the 2-3 shift flare.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2001 Montero models produced before 8/3/00 equipped with automatic transmission;
1999-2001 Montero Sport models produced before 1/19/01 equipped with automatic transmission

IMPORTANT

Dealers must update ROM packs as needed, depending on vehicle repair requirements for PCM software updates. Use the appropriate ROM pack
database number shown. Refer to TSB-01-00-001 for instructions on updating ROM packs using MEDIC. Refer to TSB-01-00-OO8REVII for
corresponding MEDIC database numbers.

Procedure

CAUTION

BATTERY VOLTAGE (AS MEASURED AT THE BATTERY POSTS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL LOAD) MUST BE 12.4V OR HIGHER IN
ORDER TO REPROGRAM THE PCM.

1.

Using the MUT-II scan tool, check to see if any DTCs are set in the PCM. If any DTC is set, follow the appropriate DTC troubleshooting and
repair instructions in the service manual. Then go to Step 3.

2.

Use the MUT-II to erase all DTCs set in the PCM.

3.

Turn the ignition key to OFF and disconnect the MUT-II.

4.

Gather the reprogramming equipment shown.
