Propeller Shaft - Shudder/Suspension Bottoming Out

SHUDDER AT ACCELERATION / SUSPENSION BOTTOMING OUT
PURPOSE
Improper propeller shaft angle could cause either of the following conditions:

(2WD Only) Shudder at acceleration when the vehicle has a heavy load in the rear cargo area.
^
(2WD/4WD) Suspension "bottoming out" when the vehicle is driven on an uneven road.
If a customer complains of either of the above conditions, install a center bearing shim kit and helper damper as described in this bulletin. This will
change the propeller shaft angle to prevent both conditions.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2000-2002 Montero Sport models
PROCEDURE
1.
Lift the vehicle on a hoist.
2.
Install the center bearing shim kit listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin:
a.
Loosen the two bolts at the top of the center bearing.
b.
Push the center bearing up. Remove and discard the two nuts and washers.
c.
Install the shims, nuts and washers provided in the kit. Apply thread sealant (Mitsubishi part number A990ZC1X05 or equivalent) and
torque to 29-39 Nm (21-29 ft/lbs).
3.
Install a helper damper and helper bracket (listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin) on both sides of the vehicle as described
in Group 34 of the Montero Sport service manual.
