If steering wheel play is excessive, refer to Group 37A Steering under "Symptom Procedures" for steering wheel play procedures. The steering
gear box adjusting bolt may require adjustment.

Test drive the vehicle. If possible, drive over a railroad track or other rough surface to test for steering column rattle at low speeds.

a.

If the rattling noise continues, check the lot number on the underside of the steering column.

CAUTION 

Before removing the air bag module, refer to Group 52B, Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). When removing and installing the steering wheel,
do not bump it against the air bag module.

If the lot number is before 980126002, replace the steering column. Refer to Group 37A Steering in the appropriate service manual.

c.

When replacing the steering column, the bolts securing the ignition switch (steering lock bolts) cannot be reused and must be replaced. Refer
to the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

NOTE 

The new intermediate shaft is most effective on vehicles with mileage under 5,000 miles and good condition tires. The new steering shaft may not be
as effective on vehicles with higher mileage and/or worn tires.

If the vibration continues after making the above repairs, check the condition of the vehicle's tires. Worn tire condition could be a source of steering
wheel vibration.
