A/T OVERHEATING - SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN
PURPOSE
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. is voluntarily recalling certain 1999 Montero Sport 4WD A/T vehicles to correct a transmission system
condition that could result in the ignition of the transmission fluid (ATF).
This bulletin contains repair procedures for eliminating this condition by reprogramming the PCM to limit the vehicle's speed to below approximately 30
mph while in 4WD low range and installing a repair kit to relocate the A/T breather vent tube. Two reprogramming ROM packs (for 3.0L engine and
3.5L engine) are included with this bulletin, subject to the conditions of the enclosed Loan Agreement.
A caution label must be affixed to the console to remind the driver of speed limitations in 4WD low range. Correction labels describing the speed
limitations must also be installed in the owner's manual.
A VIN list of affected vehicles sold in your area is included with this bulletin. A small supply of repair kits and labels will be allocated to dealers who
received affected vehicles. Parts managers are requested to review the enclosed VIN list and order additional parts as needed. Refer to the PARTS
INFORMATION section of this bulletin.
BACKGROUND
Heat generation in the transmission could cause ATF to be vented onto the hot exhaust system. This condition may result when the vehicle is operated at
highway speeds in 4WD low range for an extended period, creating excessive heat in the transmission forcing ATF out of the breather vent tube. The
vented ATF may cause smoke, and the transmission fluid could ignite when it contacts the hot exhaust system.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
Certain 1999 Montero Sport models equipped with 4-wheel drive, automatic transmission, 3.0L and 3.5L engines. These recall campaign procedures
must be performed on all affected vehicles in dealer inventory.
IMPORTANT:
Some affected vehicles have already had the A/T breather vent tube relocated. These vehicles require only PCM reprogramming and the console
label and owner's manual labels installed.
Do not assume that all vehicles in the production range are eligible for this campaign procedure. Check on the Warranty Superscreen to verify the vehicle
is an affected VIN for this campaign and that this campaign procedure has not already been completed.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
A letter has been sent to all owners of affected vehicles telling them to bring their vehicle to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have the PCM
reprogrammed, the transmission breather vent hose relocated, and a 4WD speed limitation caution label affixed to the console. A copy of the customer
notification letter appears in this bulletin.
REQUIRED OPERATIONS
Before starting the PROCEDURE section of this bulletin, CHECK ON THE WARRANTY SUPERSCREEEN to verify that the vehicle is an affected
VIN for this campaign and that this campaign procedure has not already been completed. The required operations for this recall are shown.
