SUNROOF MOTOR MALFUNCTION

This bulletin replaces TSB-02-42A-014, issued September 2002, which should be discarded. Additional information about the part number vendor
number is included. New, updated parts are identified by a suffix on the vendor number. This suffix can be "A" or a subsequent identifying letter ( "B",
"C", "D", etc.)

PURPOSE

This bulletin contains diagnostic procedures to determine if an affected vehicle requires either replacement of the sunroof motor/ECU assembly or other
diagnostic steps to troubleshoot a malfunctioning sunroof motor/ECU and/or its related circuit.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

There are two typical malfunction conditions which might occur on the affected vehicles:

Condition (A): Non-operation of Sunroof

Symptom

The sunroof will not operate at all.

Cause

This condition can occur when the internal logic data of the sunroof ECU changes without any obvious cause.

Remedy

There is a modified sunroof motor/ECU assembly available to correct this condition.

NOTE:

The headliner must be removed to access the sunroof motor assembly Refer to the service manual.

Condition (B): Erratic Sunroof Operation

Symptom

The sunroof will only move about 1 inch each time the open/close button is depressed.

Cause

In this situation the sunroof ECU either never learned or loses its learned logic data because of a poor ground connection for the sunroof motor/ECU
assembly.

NOTE:

A newly installed sunroof motor/ECU assembly has no learned logic data and must be initialized.

Remedy

Check and tighten the grounding point of the sunroof motor/ECU assembly (a self-tapping screw).

After the screw is tightened, re-initialize the sunroof ECU learning mode.

NOTE: 

The headliner must be removed to access the sunroof motor assembly ground point. Refer to the service manual.
