SUBJECT:
ENGINE DIESEL NOISE AT IDLE
PURPOSE
Some vehicles may experience a dieseling-type noise when the engine is idling. This may be due to the piston pins contacting the cylinders. Inspect the
cylinder walls for evidence of scuffing.

If scuffing is observed, replace the short block.

If no scuffing is observed, replace the pistons with new, improved parts listed below.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2001-2002 Montero and Montero Sport 3.5L models
PROCEDURE
1.
a.
If a bore scope is available, use a bore scope to inspect the cylinder walls.
b.
If your dealership does not have a bore scope available, remove the cylinder heads. Refer to Group 11A in the appropriate service manual.
2.
Inspect the cylinder walls for evidence of scuffing.
a.
If NO scuffing is observed, replace all six pistons with the new, improved parts listed below.
b.
If scuffing is observed, replace the short block.
3.
Remind customer to change the engine oil at the intervals recommended in the maintenance schedule.
