SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR WORN

PURPOSE

Excessive wear of the speedometer driven gear may cause the speedometer to become inoperative an/or the MIL to come on and set DTC 29 (P0500).
To eliminate this condition, replace the speedometer driven gear with the new, improved parts listed in this bulletin. The new parts have steel gear teeth
to prevent premature wear.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1999-2003 Montero Sport models produced before 7/02 equipped with automatic transmission

PROCEDURE

1.

Remove the speedometer driven gear. Refer to Group 23 in the appropriate service manual.

2.

Inspect the teeth on the gear. If the gear teeth are worn, replace it with the new, improved parts listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of
this bulletin.

In the GAPS system, enter the VIN and find the original speedometer driven gear part number. Then use the chart below to determine the
appropriate new part number.
