DTC P0301/P0303/P0305 ENGINE MISFIRE
PURPOSE
On some vehicles, metal burrs in the front exhaust pipe could become loose and travel into the engine cylinders during engine operation. This may result
in engine misfire and DTC P0301, P0303, and/or P0305 to set in the PCM memory.
To prevent this condition, remove the metal burrs from the front exhaust pipe as described in this bulletin.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2001 Montero models equipped with V6 engine produced before 2/9/00 (VIN1J002592)
PROCEDURE
1.
Remove the front (right side) exhaust pipe. Refer to Group 15 in the 2001 Montero service manual.
2.
Remove the front right oxygen sensor.
3.
Using a magnet and metal file or die grinder, remove all metal burrs and debris in the pipe near the opening for the oxygen sensor. Clean all metal
particles away from the pipe.
Also use a magnet to clean any other metal particles that may have collected on the face of the front catalytic converter.
4.
Remove the EGR valve and remove any metal particles from the valve seat, valve passages, and EGR tube.
5.
Remove and inspect each spark plug for damage. Clean or replace as necessary.
6.
Perform a compression pressure check as described on pages 11A-9 and 11A-10 of the 2001 Montero service manual.
7.
Reinstall the spark plugs.
8.
Reinstall the EGR valve and torque to 22 ± 4 Nm (16 ± 3 ft/lb).
