Throttle Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR/CLOSED THROTTLE POSITION SWITCH

Throttle Position Sensor Inspection Using Volt/Ohmmeter

1. Disconnect the throttle position sensor connector.
2. Measure the resistance between terminal (1) (sensor ground) and terminal (4) (sensor power).

Standard value: 3.5-6.5k Ohms

3. Connect a "pointer type/analog readout" ohmmeter between terminal (1) (sensor ground) and terminal (3) (sensor output)
4. Open the throttle valve slowly from the idle position to the full open position and check that the resistance changes smoothly in proportion with the

throttle valve opening angle.

5. If the resistance is outside the standard value, or fails to change smoothly, replace the throttle position sensor.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS

The signals of the throttle position sensor are more important for control of the automatic transmission than for control of the engine; shifting
"impact shocks" are produced if there is a malfunction of the throttle position sensor.

If the voltage of the throttle position sensor is outside the standard value, check once again after making the throttle position sensor adjustment. In
addition, if there are any indications that the fixed SAS throttle stop has been moved, adjust the fixed SAS.

Closed Throttle Position Switch Inspection

1. With the accelerator pedal released, check that the throttle valve lever is touching the fixed SAS.
2. Disconnect the throttle position sensor connector.

3. Check for continuity between throttle position sensor connector terminal (1) (sensor ground) and terminal (2) (closed throttle position switch).

Accelerator pedal released: Continuity
Accelerator pedal depressed: NO Continuity

4. If there is no continuity when the accelerator pedal is released, loosen the throttle position sensor installation screw; then, after turning all the way

in the clockwise direction, check again.

5. Replace the throttle position sensor (with built-in closed throttle position switch) if there is a malfunction.
