Power Steering Pump - Whining Noise
No.: TSB-01-37A-001
DATE: May, 2001
MODEL: 2001 Montero
SUBJECT:
POWER STEERING PUMP NOISE
PURPOSE
A whining noise at the power steering pump when driving can be eliminated by installing a new power steering fluid reservoir. The new reservoir has a
special redesigned filter which prevents air from entering the power steering fluid.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2001 Montero models produced before 1/19/01
PROCEDURE
NOTE:
To avoid keeping the vehicle overnight, perform this procedure early in the day if possible.
1.
Wait at least one hour after the vehicle is driven before removing the power steering fluid.
2.
Remove the power steering fluid reservoir. Replace with a new, improved design reservoir listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this
bulletin.
3.
Add power steering fluid until the fluid level reaches the "MAX" mark on the reservoir. Use SPII ATF.
4.
Bleed air from the power steering system as described on pages 37A-16 and 37A-17 of the 2001 Montero service manual.
!CAUTION
Be sure that the power steering fluid level remains at the "MAX" mark during the air bleeding procedure.
5.
Do not drive the vehicle for 6 to 12 hours. This is necessary in order to remove any air in the reservoir tank. Ineffective repair will result if the
vehicle is driven sooner than 6 hours.
