Piston Ring: Service and Repair

Refer to Fig. 11 for correct piston ring installation and note the following side clearances:
1.
No. 1 ring: .002-.004 inch.
2.
No. 2 ring: .001-.002 inch.
INSTALLING PISTON RING SIDE RAIL
1.
Place one end of side rail between piston ring groove and spacer expander.
2.
Hold end of ring firmly and press downward on portion to be installed until side rail is in position. Do not use a piston ring expander.
3.
Install upper side rail first, then the lower side rail.

PISTON RING END GAP LOCATION
1.
Position piston ring end gaps as shown, Fig. 12.
2.
Position oil ring expander gap at least 45° from side rail gaps but not on piston pin center line or in thrust direction.
