Axle Shaft: Service and Repair

Removal
1.
Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove rear wheel and brake drum and disconnect brake hose at wheel cylinder.
2.
Disconnect bearing case from axle housing end, Fig. 1.
3.
Remove brake backing plate, if equipped, bearing case, and axle shaft as an assembly, using tools MB990211 and MB990241 or equivalents to
remove axle shaft if necessary.
4.
Remove O-ring and wheel bearing preload shims, retaining shims for assembly.
5.
Using tools MB990211 and MB990212 or equivalents, remove oil seal.
6.
Remove wheel bearing by first removing lock washer and then, using tool MB990785 or equivalent, removing locknut.
7.
Remove lock washer and washer, then reinsert locknut on axle shaft approximately three turns.

8.
Install tool MB990787 or equivalent as shown, Fig. 2, installing nuts and washers diagonally.
9.
Remove wheel bearing by turning nuts evenly.
10.
Using hammer and drift, remove bearing outer race from bearing case.
11.
Remove oil seal from bearing case.
12.
Check all components for wear or damage and check axle shaft for runout.
Installation
1.
After applying suitable grease to outer surface of wheel bearing outer race and lip of new oil seal, then drive them into bearing case using tool Nos.
MB990935, MB990937, and MB990938 on 1984-86 models or tool Nos. MB990938-01 and MB990937-01 on 1987-88 models or equivalents.
2.
Slide bearing case and wheel bearing over axle shaft and lubricate wheel bearing rollers, then install wheel bearing inner race with tool MB990799
or equivalent.
3.
Install washer, lock washer, and locknut, torquing locknut to 131-159 ft. lbs. with tool MB990785 or equivalent.
4.
Bend tab on lock washer into groove on locknut, tightening nut as necessary to align tab and groove.
5.
Lubricate lip of new oil seal, then using tools MB990930 on 1984-86 models or MB990932 on 1987-88 models and MB990938 or equivalents,
drive oil seal into axle housing.
6.
Adjust axial play of rear axle shaft as follows:
a. Remove any old sealer or rust from mating surfaces of bearing case and axle housing.
b. Insert a .04 inch shim and O-ring into left side of axle housing and apply semi-drying sealer to mating surface of bearing case.
