Stabilizer Bar: Service and Repair
LESS 4 WHEEL
1.
Disconnect strut bar at lower control arm.
2.
Disconnect strut bar at strut bar bracket and slide bar out.
3.
Disconnect stabilizer bar at stabilizer bracket and at stabilizer links and remove bar.
4.
Inspect stabilizer bar, strut bar, and bushings, replacing as necessary.
5.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Left hand strut bar is marked with ``L''.
b. Strut bar bushings for front side and rear side are different. Bushing with convex surface is installed on front side.
c. When installing strut bar to strut bar bracket, distance between face of innermost nut and end of strut bar should be 3.8 inch on 1984 models
or 2.9 inch on 1985-88 models. Torque top end nut to 55-61 ft. lbs. after vehicle is lowered to ground. Check caster adjustment and correct as
necessary, then adjust distance between nut face and bar end as necessary.
d. When installing stabilizer bar to links, tighten first nut so that distance between top of nut and end of bolt is .87-.94 inch
e. Torque stabilizer bracket attaching bolts to 6-8 ft. lbs.
WITH 4 WHEEL DRIVE
1.
Remove stabilizer bar from lower arm and stabilizer link assembly.
2.
Inspect stabilizer bar, bushings, and stabilizer link assembly, and repair or replace as necessary.
3.
Install stabilizer bar, noting the following:
a. When installing stabilizer link assembly to No. 1 crossmember, tighten self locking nut so that distance from base of nut to top of stud is
.63-.71 inch on 1984 models or .24-.31 inch on 1985-88 models.
b. When installing ends of stabilizer bar to lower arms, tighten self locking nuts so that distance from base of nut to end of bolt is .63-.71 inch
on 1984 models or .24-.31 inch on 1985-88 models.
c. Torque stabilizer bracket attaching nuts to 6-8 ft. lbs.
