If a 4WD vehicle with automatic freewheeling front hubs makes a ratcheting sound when in motion, it is possible that the sound is caused by incomplete
engagement of the hub slide gear with the gear teeth in the hub body. (See page 2-35 of the 1984 Truck or Montero Service Manual.)
This condition can be caused by:

Cold oil in the transfer case causing the propeller shaft to rotate.

Incomplete engagement of the slide gear with the gear teeth in the hub when unlocking the hub.
