SUBJECT:
DELAYED A/T ENGAGEMENT AFTER A/T COOLER RETURN FILTER REPLACEMENT
This TSB supercedes TSB-05-23-007, issued November, 2005, for revised DTC information and the addition of sump filter replacement.
Revised information is indicated by >.
PURPOSE
After the A/T cooler return filter has been replaced during service or repair, some vehicles may experience an initial delayed engagement when the
shifter is placed into gear after the engine has been off for more than 12 hours. This condition is due to a possible defective internal A/T cooler return
filter allowing fluid to drain out of the torque converter while the engine and transmission are not operating. As a result, there is a delay in gear
engagement at engine start-up while the torque converter is filling to its proper fluid level.
This condition will not damage the transmission, but it may concern the customer. In addition, the customer may also experience MIL illumination.
Investigation may determine that the MIL is due to one or more of the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs):
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2006 Raider equipped with V8 engine and automatic transmission
PROCEDURE
1.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
2.
Remove the transmission skid plate (if equipped).
3.
Place a large container under the transmission oil pan.
4.
Loosen the transmission oil pan bolts. Separate the oil pan from the transmission housing at one corner to break it loose. Allow the fluid to drain.
Then remove the oil pan.
5.
Clean the oil pan and magnet with a clean, dry lint-free cloth.
6.
Use a plastic scraper to clean the transmission case oil pan surface.
CAUTION
USE CARE TO PREVENT SCRATCHING THE OIL PAN SEALING SURFACE.
7.
Remove and discard the round A/T cooler return filter.
