Water Pump: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1.

Drain cooling system.  Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Remove drive belt and water pump pulley.

3.

Remove timing belt covers and timing belt tensioner.

4.

Remove water pump mounting bolts and alternator brace.

5.

Remove water pump assembly.

INSPECTION

1.

Check for cracks, damage, or wear.

2.

Check bearing for sluggish rotation, noise, or abnormal operation.

3.

Check seal for signs of leaking.  If seal "weep hole" shows signs of leaking, seal is defective.

INSTALLATION

1.

Install water pump assembly using NEW gasket and O-ring.  Torque water pump mounting bolts to:

Head mark "4" bolt:    9-10.5 Ft. Lbs. (12-14.5 Nm)
Head mark "7" bolt:    15-19.5 Ft. Lbs. (20-26 Nm)

2.

Install timing belt tensioner and timing belt.

3.

Install timing belt covers.

4.

Install water pump pulley and drive belts.

5.

Adjust drive belt tension.

6.

Fill cooling system with coolant.

7.

Start engine and check for leaks and proper thermostat operation.  Correct as necessary.
