Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair

Replace

1.

Raise and support vehicle and remove front wheels.

2.

Remove brake caliper and wire aside.

3.

Disconnect lower arm ball joint from knuckle.

4.

Remove stabilizer and strut bars from lower control arm.

5.

Disconnect tie rod end from knuckle.

6.

Remove driveshaft from hub.

7.

Remove hub and knuckle as an assembly from strut assembly.

8.

Inspect hub, spline, oil seal, brake disc, steering knuckle and bearing, replacing as necessary.

9.

Reverse procedure to install.

Service

1.

Using tools MB990998 and MB991001 or equivalents, remove hub from knuckle.

2.

Secure knuckle in vise, then remove brake disc from hub.

3.

Using tools MB990339, MB990370 and MB990781 or equivalents, remove outer bearing inner race from hub.

4.

Using screwdriver, remove oil seal from knuckle.

5.

Drive bearing outer race from knuckle. If either outer or inner race needs replacement, they must be replaced as a set.

6.

Ensure that identification marks on bearing and hub are correct. Do not use bearing or hub without identification marks.

7.

Apply suitable grease to outside surface of bearing outer race.

8.

Using tools MB990933, MB990938 and MB990776 or equivalents, install bearing outer race into knuckle. Replace knuckle if press fitting force
required is less than 4400 lbs.

9.

Install disc to hub and torque to 36-43 ft. lbs.

10.

Apply suitable grease to bearings and inside surface of hub.

11.

Place outside bearing inner race into knuckle.

12.

Using tools MB990934 and MB990938 or equivalents, drive hub side oil seal into knuckle.

13.

Apply suitable grease to lip of oil seal surfaces that contact hub.

14.

Insert inner bearing into knuckle.

15.

Using tool MB990998 or equivalent, torque hub to knuckle nut to 144-188 ft. lbs.

16.

Rotate hub to seat bearing.

17.

Measure total preload, which should be 11.3 inch lbs. or less. If total preload is zero inch lbs., measure hub axial play, which should be .004 inch
or less.

18.

If total preload and hub axial play are not within specifications, repeat service procedure.

19.

Remove tool MB990998.

20.

Apply suitable grease to bearing and inside of knuckle.

21.

Using tool MB990934 and MB990938 or equivalents, drive driveshaft side oil seal into knuckle until it contacts bearing outer race.

22.

Apply suitable grease to lip of oil seal.
