Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection
Models W/External IC Unit
Coil Primary Test
1. Disconnect wiring from negative terminal on coil.
2. Connect an ohmmeter between positive and negative terminals on coil.
3. If reading is not between .82-1.02 ohms, replace coil.
Coil Secondary Test
1. Disconnect high tension lead from coil, and connect an ohmmeter between high tension tower and negative terminal on coil.
2. Resistance should measure 8,200-12,400 ohms on models with external IC unit and Stanza models with internal IC unit, 8,000-12,000 ohms on
1984-86 200SX models with internal IC unit, or 7,300-1 1,000 ohms on all other models with internal unit
3. If resistance is not within specification, replace coil.
Primary Circuit Test
Fig. 2 Primary circuit test connections with external IC unit.
1. Disconnect harness from IC unit and connect voltmeter as shown in Fig. 2.
2. Turn ignition switch to on position. Meter should read 11.5-12.5 volts.
3. If reading is less than 11.5 volts, and all primary wiring has continuity, test coil primary winding.
