Canister Purge Solenoid: Description and Operation
Vacuum Control Solenoid
PURPOSE
The Canister Purge Solenoid will either allow vacuum to pass to the Purge Control Valve or vent the vacuum based on signals from the ECM. The
Canister Purge Solenoid also functions as the EGR Control Solenoid.
LOCATION
On a bracket on the back of the cylinder head, near the firewall
OPERATION
The Canister Purge Solenoid has two modes; it is either energized by the ECM and vents vacuum or it is de-energized and allows vacuum to pass
to the Purge Control Valve on the Evaporative Canister.
The Purge Solenoid is ENERGIZED (vents vacuum) when:
^ Engine RPM is less than 800
^ Engine RPM is more than 5200
^ Engine coolant temperature is below 60° C (140° F)
^ Vehicle speed is less than 11 mph (18 km/h)
The Purge Solenoid is DE-ENERGIZED (allows vacuum) when:
^ Any other condition other than above.
