TROUBLE DIAGNOSES AND CORRECTIONS FOR SPEEDOMETER NOISE

AND POINTER VIBRATION (ALL MODELS)
DEFINITION OF SPEEDOMETER NOISE AND POINTER VIBRATION
Speedometer noise refers to a ticking or growling sound which occurs in response to an increase in driving speed, while pointer vibration refers to the
abnormal fluctuation of the speedometer pointer so that the actual speed cannot be determined, 

PROBABLE CAUSES OF SPEEDOMETER NOISE AND VIBRATION

(1)

Incorrect or poor connection of speedometer cable.

(2)

Inner (speedometer) cable too long.

(3)

Sharp edges at end of inner cable.

(4)

Lack of speedometer cable lubricant.

(5)

Sharp cable bend, improper cable routing or plastic tie wraps around cable too tight.

(6)

Rust formation, breakage, wear or damage of inner cable.

(7)

Worn or cracked pinion gear/tooth.

(8)

Foreign particles on speedometer component parts.

GENERAL PRECAUTIONS DURING INSPECTION

(1)

The speedometer cable consists of an outer case and an inner cable, which is coated with grease. Never pull the outer case forcibly or make a
sharp bend, as this may cause the case to elongate and, as a result, the amount of protrusion of the inner cable beyond the case will be
shortened. It also may break the outer case, allowing water into the cable case and resulting in rust formation or damage to the inner cable.

(2)

Do not allow the speedometer cable to be coiled in a diameter of less than 300mm (11 in.) when keeping it in storage.

(3)

Always handle the speedometer carefully and keep it clean. Foreign particles, such as metal chips, may cause premature wear of gears,
resulting in false indication of the speedometer. Incorrect handling or accidental dropping may deform component parts, resulting in damage
to the speedometer.
