WHEN IS A "PROBLEM" NOT A PROBLEM? (Some General Characteristics of FM Radio Reception) Sometimes a customer may complain about a
"problem" in FM reception when no problem actually exists. The customer may simply be noticing the normal reception characteristics of FM radios.
Here are some facts about FM reception that can help you explain to a customer why a perceived problem is really not a problem at all. (NOTE: For a
complete review of radio reception characteristics, see Technical Bulletin BE85-016[TS85-103]).
Because of the reflecting characteristics of FM signals, direct and reflected signals may reach the antenna at the same time, cancelling out each other.
This is called "multipath cancellation", and it produces electronic "chuck holes", or dead spots. As the vehicle moves through these spots, the listener
will hear a momentary "flutter". This same characteristic causes "ghost" images in a television when an airplane passes overhead. FM STATION
