SERVICE INFORMATION

The Limited Edition 300ZX is finished in Moonglow-White Poly which is unique among Nissan finishes. It is a three-stage process unlike the current
production Basecoat/Clearcoat. This bulletin describes the application process for the PPG "Factory-Pack" Tri-Coat paint system.

The repair of the Moonglow-White Poly requires a slightly different application process compared to the standard two-stage process. Many of the usual
application techniques do not apply when repairing a Tri-Coat finish.

As you know, a metallic color can be adjusted by the following:

1.

Reduction (amount and choice of solvent)

2.

Air pressure

3.

Gun distance from surface

4.

Fluid adjustment

5.

Fluid tip size

The color is affected as follows:

-

Higher air pressure/increased reduction will cause a color to shift to the light side.

-

Lower air pressure/decreased reduction will cause a color to shift to the dark side.

Color adjustment is different for the Nissan Tri-Coat system. The basecoat is a solid color. It is the application process of the Pearlcoat which adjusts the
color in this system. Specifically, it is the number of pearl coats (film build) that determines the color match. Film build is the primary means of a color
match not gun technique. A sample panel can be used to determine the number of pearl coats necessary to match the color on the vehicle. The process of
making a sample panel is described later in this bulletin.

NOTE:

If the Pearlcoat is applied too wet, mottling may occur. If it's applied too dry, a white gritty appearance will result.

Reduction and Application

Basecoat (DBU 4181) -

Reduction:

Reduce in a ratio of 1 part Basecoat to 1-1/2 to 2 parts Reactive Reducer (150% - 200%).

DRR-1170 for below 70~F

DRR-1185 for 70~F to 85~F

DRR-1195 for above 85~F

Application:

Apply Basecoat to hide at 35 to 45 PSI. *

Pearlcoat (DBU 4182) -

Reduction:

Reduce Pearlcoat in a ratio of 1 part Pearlcoat to 2 parts Reactive Reducer (200%).

DRR 1170 for below 65~F

DRR 1185 for 65~ F to 80~F

^

DRR 1195 for above 85~F

Application:

Apply proper number of pearl coats to match at 55 to 60 PSI.
