    When disassembling power steering gear, refer to Fig. 20, noting the following:

1.

Before starting work, thoroughly clean all parts in suitable cleaning solvent and blow dry with compressed air.

2.

Discard all O-rings and oil seals upon removal.

INSPECTION & ADJUSTMENT

Pinion Preload & Rack Starting Force

1.

After disconnecting hydraulic line and draining fluid, measure pinion bearing preload and rack starting force. Pinion preload should be less than
10 inch lbs. on 1984 units or less than 16 inch lbs. on 1985-88 units. Rack starting force should be 27.6-41.9 lbs. at steering center on 1984-86
units or 55 lbs. or less in neutral position on 1987-88 units.

If pinion preload and/or rack starting force are not within specifications, adjust retainer adjusting screw.

3.

If retainer adjustment cannot be made correctly, fully loosen retainer adjusting screw, adjust pinion preload, and readjust retainer adjusting screw.

4.

If pinion preload cannot be adjusted to specifications, replace steering gear assembly.

Retainer Adjustment

1.

Remove retainer adjusting screw and clean old locking compound off of threads.

2.

Apply new locking compound to threads, torque screw to approximately 2.2 ft. lbs. and back off screw 20° to 25°.
