If preload and starting force are within specifications, torque locknut to 29-43 ft. lbs. and check rack for smooth operation.

4.

On 1987-88 models with turbocharged engine, proceed as follows:

a. Install steering gear assembly on vehicle, then start engine.
b. Check rack sliding force. Rack sliding force should be 55 lbs. or more.
c. After rack sliding force has been checked, ensure steering wheel returns smoothly when driving.

Pinion Preload Adjustment

1.

Ensure that retainer adjusting screw is completely loosened.

2.

Screw in rear housing cover fully and back off 180° to 360°, turn pinion several rotations, and measure pinion starting torque. Pinion starting
torque (T1) should be less than 6.1 inch lbs. Do not allow freeplay for pinion.

3.

Screw in rear housing cover until pinion starting torque reaches (T2), then torque locknut to 58-101 ft. lbs. T2 = T1 + 4.3 inch lbs.

Measure pinion starting torque (T3). T3 = 6.9 inch lbs. or less and T1 + .87-2.17 inch lbs.

5.

If T3 is not as specified, repeat step 2 through 4 and readjust pinion preload.

Tie Rod Outer Socket

1.

Check ball joint for swinging torque. Swinging torque should be 2.6-26 inch lbs. on 1984 units or 1.3-26 inch lbs. on 1985-88 units.

2.

Check dust cover for excessive cracking, replacing as necessary.

Tie Rod Inner Socket

1.

Check inner socket for swinging torque and axial play. Swinging torque should be 8.7-69.4 inch lbs. on 1984 units or .9-69.4 on 1985-88 units.
There should be no axial play on all units.

2.

If ball stud is worn and play in axial direction is excessive or joint is hard to swing, replace as complete unit.

Boot

1.

If boot is excessively cracked, replace it.

Cylinder Tubes & Breather Hoses

1.

Check cylinder tubes and breather hoses for scratches or other damage, replacing as necessary.

Steering Gear Component Parts

1.

Check component parts for cracking, wear or other damage, replacing steering gear assembly as necessary.
