Completely tighten rear housing cover with Rear Cover Wrench J28819 and then loosen 45 degrees (Figure 25).

Turn pinion shaft all the way to right and left several times. Remove cellophane tape from pinion shaft. Measure pinion starting torque using a
lb.in. torque wrench and Torque Adapter J26364. It should be less than 7 lb.in. Adjust rear housing cover until pinion starting torque is about 7
in-lbs. Tighten lock nut with Rear Housing Lock Nut Wrench J28818 to 78-137 N-m (58-101 ft-lbs.).

Apply a coat of grease to the contact surfaces on the retainer bushing and spring (Figure 26).

Apply locking sealer to the threads on the retainer adjusting screw. Tighten the screw to 26 in-lbs. then loosen one-eighth turn.

Measure pinion rotating torque (should be less than 16 in-lbs.) and rack sliding force (should be less than 41.9 lbs. at center of rack) (Figures 27
and 28).

Adjust retainer if necessary, then torque locknut with Mainshaft Nut Wrench J26348 to 39-59 N-m (29-43 ft-lbs).

On 50th Anniversary models, install one spacer on each end of the rack (Figure 29). Install new lock plates on each inner tie rod end and apply
thread locking agent to the tie rod inner socket threads.

34.

Assemble the inner tie rod ends and new lock plates to the rack (Figure 29). Be sure the teeth on the lock plate engage with the slots on the end of
the rack.
