Heater Core: Service and Repair

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable, place temperature control lever in HOT position, and drain cooling system.

2.

Disconnect heater hoses in engine compartment.

3.

Remove screws securing console and remove console after disconnecting wiring harness connectors.

4.

Remove bolts securing front seats, then remove seats.

5.

Remove left and right lower dash panels.

6.

Remove door sill moldings and seat belts as needed, then remove front carpet.

7.

Remove fuse block and disconnect wiring harness connectors to junction block, noting position for reassembly.

8.

Pull off horn pad and remove steering wheel retaining nut. During assembly, torque steering wheel retaining nut to 27-38 ft. lbs.

9.

Mark position of steering wheel in relation to shaft and remove wheel using a suitable puller.

10.

Remove steering column cover and screws securing combination switch, then disconnect and remove switch.

11.

Disconnect speedometer cable, radio antenna lead, and wiring harness connectors to instrument panel.

12.

Remove choke control knob and retainer.

13.

Remove screws securing instrument cluster bezel and pad, then remove bezel and pad.

14.

Pull off A/C-heater control knobs, remove control face plate, then remove screws securing control to instrument panel.

15.

Remove screws securing radio and remove radio.

16.

Remove defroster grille and lefthand side ventilator duct and heater nozzle.

17.

Remove bolts securing instrument panel, Fig. 19, then remove instrument panel.

18.

Remove bolts securing rear seat heater duct and remove duct.

Disconnect wiring harness connectors between heater case and control assembly and main wiring harness, then remove screw securing heater
control ground strap.

20.

Disconnect control cable at air intake housing, remove bolts securing heater case, then remove heater case and control assembly.

21.

Disconnect control cables at heater case, and remove clips securing control, then remove control.

22.

Disconnect control linkage to water valve, remove bolts securing valve and heater core, and remove valve and core as an assembly.

23.

Disconnect hoses between heater core and water valve and remove valve.

24.

Reverse procedure to install, then adjust controls.
