Wrap cellophane tape around splines of new pinion assembly (Figure 15). Lightly coat new pinion assembly with power steering fluid. Carefully
install new pinion so that no binding or galling occurs. Punch mark should face exactly toward rear of car (Figure 16).

Remove o-ring seal on bottom of rear housing and replace with new one in seal kit. Coat o-ring and inner walls of rear housing with power steering
fluid. Then install housing over new pinion assembly.

Be careful not to nick or cut sealing rings on pinion. Align match marks, torque bolts to 8-12 N-m (5.8-8.7 ft.lbs) (Figure 17).

Properly position thrust washers and thrust needle bearing on pinion upper surface (Figure 18).

Remove o-ring seal and pinion oil seal from rear housing cover and replace with new ones from seal kit. Lightly coat inside of oil seal with power
steering fluid and carefully slide rear housing cover over tape-covered pinion splines (Figure 19).

Completely tighten rear housing cover with rear cover wrench J28819 and then loosen 45 degrees (Figure 20). Turn pinion shaft all the way to
right and left several times. Measure pinion rotating torque and record. Tighten rear housing cover until rotating torque is 1.3 to 2.2 in.lbs. higher.
