Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Axle Shaft, Halfshaft U-Joint Type
Removal/Installation
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel.
2.
Unfasten brake caliper assembly, leaving brake line attached.
3.
Remove tie-rod ball joint from knuckle, then separate driveshaft from steering knuckle by tapping on driveshaft.
When removing driveshafts,
cover boots with cloth to prevent damage to them.
4.
On models with automatic transaxle, if replacing both driveshafts, remove righthand driveshaft before removing lefthand driveshaft.
5.
On all models, use a large screwdriver to pry driveshaft out of transaxle.
6.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install new oil seal in transaxle.
b. Use oil seal protector tool Nos. KV38106800 and KV38106700 or equivalents, when inserting driveshaft into transaxle.
c. After inserting driveshaft, press-fit circular clip into groove of transaxle side gear.
After installing clip, try to pull flange out of side joint by
hand. If flange pulls out, circular clip is not properly installed into side gear.

DISASSEMBLY procedure to assembly and note the following:
Gear Case Assembly
1.
Assemble pinion mates, side gears and thrust washers in differential case.
2.
Install pinion shaft to differential case.
3.
Adjust side gear-to-pinion mate backlash by selecting side gear thrust washers. Backlash should be .0039-.0079 inch (less than .0059).
4.
Lock pinion shaft lockpin using a punch after secured into place.
5.
Apply oil to gear tooth surfaces and thrust surfaces and check if they turn properly.
6.
Place ring gear on differential case and
torque bolts to 65-72 ft. lbs.
