Secure steering gear in vise with suitable holding fixture and set worm gear in straight ahead position.

Remove sector shaft cover attaching bolts, Fig. 1.

Remove sector shaft with sector shaft cover by pushing from opposite end.

5.

Remove sector shaft cover from sector shaft.

6.

Remove sector shaft oil seal, if necessary.

7.

Using tool KV48101500 or equivalent, loosen adjusting plug locknut.

8.

Remove worm gear with worm bearing.

9.

Using suitable tools, remove oil seal from adjusting plug.

Assembly

    Before assembling, lubricate all metal parts with gear oil and apply suitable lubricant in space between sealing lips of new sector shaft and adjusting
plug oil seals.

Fit worm gear assembly with worm gear bearing in gear housing.

2.

Using suitable tool, install adjusting plug.

3.

Rotate worm shaft a few turns in both directions to settle worm bearing, then measure worm bearing preload. Preload should be 1.7-5.2 inch lbs.

Apply suitable sealant to locknut, install and tighten locknut, then ensure that preload is still within specifications.

Select and install shaft adjusting screw shim that provides endplay of .0004-.0012 inch between sector shaft and adjusting screw.

6.

Coat seal contacting face of oil seal with gear oil, then press oil seal into steering gear housing.

7.

Install sector cover on adjusting screw with sector shaft.

8.

Set worm gear in straight ahead position, then insert sector shaft and sector cover assembly with gasket into gear housing, being careful not to
scratch oil seal.

9.

Torque sector cover attaching bolts to 11-18 ft. lbs.

10.

Fill assembly with gear oil and install filler plug.

Rotate worm gear a few turns in both directions to settle steering gear, then measure steering gear preload in straight ahead direction. Preload
should be 7.4-10.9 inch lbs. Backlash at gear arm top end should be 0-.004 inch.

12.

If steering gear preload is not within specifications, readjust adjusting screw to obtain correct preload. Always adjust steering gear preload by
turning adjusting screw in tightening direction.
