TRUCK (D21) KA24E ENGINE NOISE

APPLIED MODELS:
All Trucks (D21) Equipped with the KA24E Engine

SERVICE INFORMATION:
Use the following procedure to diagnose and repair Trucks (D21), equipped with KA24E engines, which demonstrate engine noise or knocking at light
load or during take-off.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

Confirm the customer's complaint. If the noise is a light tapping or knocking noise heard from the driver's seat during vehicle take off or under
light load at low engine speeds (under 2000 RPM), use these procedures to correct.

Remove the oil pan and measure # 1 main bearing clearance with plastigage (ensure the crankshaft is supported [see NOTE] and free of oil for
accurate results).

NOTE:

To ensure accurate measurement of main bearing clearance, the crankshaft must be supported and tight against the upper bearing shell. Using a
suitable hydraulic jack and a piece of wood, 1/2" thick, (to insulate the jack's lift arm from the surface of the engine), apply a SLIGHT upward
pressure near the center main bearing area. DO NOT APPLY THE JACK DIRECTLY TO THE SURFACE OF THE BEARING JOURNAL.

If clearance exceeds specifications, replace # 1 main bearing with a bearing one (1) or two (2) grades higher. Preferred main bearing clearance is the
lower (tighter) half of the specification:

Recheck the bearing clearance to ensure that it is within specification. Prior to reinstalling the oil pan, clean the mating surfaces of the oil pan and
engine. Use Nissan Sealant P/N 999MP-A7007 or Loctite 599 "Ultra Grey Gasket Maker", P/N 82194.
