Rear Knuckle: Service and Repair

1.

Remove hub assembly as outlined.

2.

Separate driveshaft from knuckle by tapping on end of shaft. Do not strike end of shaft directly. Place block of wood over end of shaft to
prevent damage.

3.

Remove tie rod nut, then separate tie rod from knuckle using suitable puller.

4.

Loosen but do not remove nuts securing upper and lower ball joints to steering knuckle.

5.

Release upper and lower ball joints from knuckle using suitable puller. Do not remove ball joint retaining nuts until lower link is supported
with jack.

6.

Support lower link with jack to relieve spring tension, remove ball joint nuts, then remove spindle.

7.

Inspect drive axle needle bearing for damage, scoring and wear. If replacement is necessary, proceed as follows;

a. Remove bearing using drift or suitable puller.
b. Install replacement bearing using driver with the same outer diameter as bearing. When installing needle bearing, ensure seal surface faces

out.

8.

Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation. Torque lower ball joint nut to 87-141 ft. lbs., upper ball joint nut to 58-108 ft. lbs. and tie
rod nut to 40-72 ft. lbs.
