Brake Drum: Service and Repair
Removal
BRAKE DRUM REMOVAL
1. Release parking brake lever fully, then remove drum.
Brake Shoe Adjuster
NOTE: If drum is hard to remove, the following procedures should be carried out.

Remove plug. Then shorten adjuster to make clearance between brake shoe and drum.

Install two bolts as shown. Tighten the two bolts gradually.
BRAKE DRUM REPAIR

Using a brake lathe, machine brake drum if it shows score marks, partial wear or stepped wear.

Contact surfaces should be fine finished with No. 120 to 150 emery paper.

Using a drum micrometer, measure inside diameter to make sure drum is still within serviceable limits. For drum service specifications, refer to
Specifications.
^
After brake drum has been completely reconditioned or replaced, check drum and shoes for proper contact pattern.
Warning: Clean brake lining and inside of drum with a vacuum dust collector to minimize the hazard of airborne materials.
