Ball Joint: Testing and Inspection
UPPER
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle.
2.
Clamp dial indicator onto transverse link and place indicator tip on lower edge of brake caliper.
3.
Ensure front wheels are straight and brake pedal is depressed.
4.
Place a pry bar between transverse link and inner rim of wheel.
5.
While pushing and releasing pry bar, observe maximum dial indicator value.
6.
Movement should not exceed .063 inch. If ball joint movement is beyond specifications, replace ball joint as necessary.
LOWER
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle.
2.
Remove tire and wheel assembly.
3.
Clamp dial indicator onto upper link and place indicator tip on knuckle near ball joint.
4.
Jack up lower link approximately .79 inch.
5.
Place a pry bar between upper link and upper link spindle.
6.
While pushing and releasing pry bar, observe maximum dial indicator value. Movement should not exceed .063 inch for 2WD models and .020 for
4WD models. If ball joint movement is beyond specifications, replace ball joint as necessary.
