Brake Master Cylinder: Service and Repair
Master Cylinder - With ABS
Clean & Inspect
Examine reservoirs for foreign matter and check all passages for restrictions. If there is any indication of contamination or evidence of corrosion,
service the hydraulic system as needed.
When disassembled, wash all parts in denatured alcohol or clean brake fluid. Use an air hose to blow out all passages, orifices and valve holes. Air dry
and place parts on clean paper or lint-free cloth.

Check components for wear, damage, or corrosion. Replace as needed.
2.
Check master cylinder bore for scoring, rust, pitting or etching. Replace as necessary.
Removal/Installation
Do not spill brake fluid on painted areas, it may cause paint damage.
1.
Connect a vinyl tube to the bleeder screws.
2.
Depress brake pedal, open bleeder valves and drain fluid into suitable container. Repeat until master cylinder is empty.
3.
Disconnect brake lines, remove master cylinder attaching nuts, then master cylinder.
4.
Reverse procedure to install, bleed brakes, refer to Brakes and Traction Control/Brakes/Service and Repair.
Overhaul

Refer to Fig. 1, for master cylinder overhaul procedures, noting the following:
1.
If piston assembly is stuck in cylinder bore, gradually apply air to fluid outlet port.
2.
Replace stopper cap if claws are damaged. Bend claw inward when installing new stopper.
