DIAGNOSING AND REPAIRING TOP END NOISE IN VE30DE ENGINES
General Information
APPLIED MODELS:
1992-93 Maxima SE
SERVICE INFORMATION
Some VE30DE engines installed in '92 and '93 SE Maxima's may exhibit top end noise. Although the noise is often described as "lifter noise", it is rarely
caused by the hydraulic lash adjusters. There are four identified sources of this type of noise. In order of probability, the noise may be caused by: (1) the
VTC sprocket, (2) the upper timing chain tensioners, (3) debris in the cylinder head oil galleys restricting the oil supply to the VTC sprocket or chain
tensioner, or (4) misalignment of the cylinder head camshaft bearing caps. An improved VTC sprocket has been developed to resolve many of the noise
incidents.
