ENGINE KNOCKING NOISE -- POWER VALVE SCREW INGESTION
APPLIED MODEL:
1992 Maxima with manual transmission
SERVICE INFORMATION
Some of the applied vehicles may develop a loud engine knocking noise that can occur if the power valve screw comes loose, is pulled through the intake
manifold, and into the engine.
This incident can be identified by opening the intake manifold cover plate on the engine wall side of the engine. (Cover is held in place with eight 10 mm
nuts and bolts.) Check to see if the three screws which hold the power valve to its shaft are in place. Use Loctite Threadlocker 290 (green), Three Bond
1303B or equivalent and tighten the screws if they are loose. If any screws are missing, remove the cylinder heads and check for damage. Remove all
foreign material from inside the engine and replace any damaged components.
