SERVICE INFORMATION
This bulletin contains Parts Information and Service Procedures to rebuild a leaking steering gear from the Applied Models.
DIAGNOSING THE LEAKAGE Leaks from the steering gear can be external or internal. External leaks occur at fittings, on hoses, or through porosity
in the steering gear housing. Internal leaks occur through seals inside the gear and result in fluid leaks at the steering gear boots, the pinion input shaft, or
retainer.
Before attempting to rebuild a Maxima steering gear, determine the type of gear installed in the vehicle. Maximas built before December, 1985 have a
different design gear that requires a different rebuild kit and procedure. Steering gears from these models should be rebuilt using Technical Bulletin
ST86-005 (TS86-103).
The later design gear can be distinguished quickly by examination. The later design does not have a separate aluminum cylinder end housing and has
wire boot clamps instead of metal band clamps.
