Remove the top shock mount nut and do not reuse the nut. Disconnect the shock absorber from the mounting stud (see Figure 25) to inspect the
stud threads.

Remove any excess undercoat or paint from the stud threads and from the shoulder at the base of the stud using a suitable cleaner such as carb
cleaner.

4.

Carefully inspect the stud threads for damage. If damage is present, use a M14 X 1.5 die to clean the threads. Snap-On tool number DR1415M or
equivalent.

5.

Reinstall the shock absorber. Use a new nut (P/N 08912-9441A) and torque to 60-78 N.m (44-58 ft-lbs).

6.

Reinstall the splash shield screw.

7.

Repeat steps 1 through 6 on the opposite side of the vehicle.

F. Front Strut Insulator and Bound Bumper Repl.

REPAIR F. Front Strut Insulator and Bound Bumper Replacement

There are two types of front struts, electrically adjustable and standard. Most Pathfinders are equipped with the standard type. Each type has a different
shaft nut and corresponding kit part number. The bound bumper is being replaced to eliminate a squeak noise that occurs when the bound bumper rubs
on the shock shaft.

CAUTION:

Do not use an impact wrench to disassemble or assemble the front strut center nut.

1.

Remove the nut for the strut to stabilizer bar connecting rod attachment and do not reuse the nut.

2.

Remove the two nuts and bolts that attach the strut to the spindle and do not reuse the nuts.

3.

If the vehicle is equipped with electrically adjustable struts, disconnect the connector.

4.

Remove the three nuts that attach the top of the strut to the inner fender and do not reuse the nuts.

5.

Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.

CAUTION:

If the strut is disassembled without using the special tool, the threads on the shaft and the upper insulator may be damaged.
