If the leading edge of the gauge does not interfere with the adjacent tread block (e.g. a gap is present between the gauge and the tread block), the
tire is OK (see Figures 4 & 5). This is considered to be normal wear when a tire has approximately the same tread depth across the entire surface
of the tire. If the tire passes the above test, but the inner or outer edge of the tread is worn more than the rest of the tire, this is an indication that the
vehicle wheel alignment may be out of specifications. If the vehicle is out of alignment, the vehicle should be realigned under normal warranty
procedures.
Repeat this procedure on the remaining three tires. Do not inspect the spare tire.
5a.
If any one tire does not pass inspection, proceed to replace the tires as follows:
Dunlop/Bridgestone: Replace the incident tire and the other one on that axle.
General: Must replace all four tires. DO NOT REPLACE SPARE TIRE.
NOTE:
Always put the new tires on the front axle.
GENERAL TIRE INSTALLATION NOTE
Before installing any General tires, make sure that they are the countermeasure type tire. This can easily be done by inspection of the Department Of
Transportation (DOT) number molded into the sidewall of the tire. The last three digits are a date code. The code 486 means the 48th week of 1996 was
the manufacture date of the tire. Some tires will have a number that ends with a 7 and this indicates that it was made in 1997. Any tire with a number of
486 or higher or ends with a 7 is countermeasure and may be installed. If the number is less than 486 or does not end with a 7, return the tire to General
and request a replacement set of the countermeasure tires.
