Move the dust cover portion of the bound bumper towards the top of the strut and attach the supplied special tool (# J42956) to the front strut shaft
as shown (see Figure 26), take extra care not to scratch the strut rod shaft. Be careful not to cross-thread the bolt that holds the special tool
together. This is necessary to allow you to remove the top nut without damaging the strut and to prevent it from retracting into the strut during
disassembly.

Place the strut assembly in the spring compressor and compress the spring. NMC recommends the use of a wall or bench mounted spring
compressor such as the Brannick available through Tech-Mate (P/N 174-7200).

While holding the special tool with a 1/2" extension inserted into the socket on the tool, remove the nut at the top of the shock absorber using a
wrench and do not reuse the nut. Do not allow the shaft to rotate.

Remove the spring, upper spring seat and insulator. Do not reuse the upper spring seat. Carefully inspect the strut rod threads for damage (see
Figure 27). If there is damage to the shoulder at the base of the threads, replace the strut. To check for damage to the threads, run a non-locking
M12 x 1.25 mm nut all the way down the shaft by hand. If it does not thread smoothly by hand to the bottom, replace the strut.
