Pinion Gear: Service and Repair
Drive Pinion Height, 200 Model Axle

1982-84 2WD Pickup w/Dual Rear Wheels & 4WD Pickup

    Adjust pinion height with washer installed between rear bearing inner race Land drive pinion head.

1.

Press in front and rear bearing outer races.

2.

Install rear bearing inner race on dummy shaft KV38103910 or equivalent, and install assembly on carrier.

3.

Install front bearing and companion flange and tighten drive pinion nut until drive pinion bearing preload is 8.7-11.3 inch lbs.

4.

Install height gauge on carrier and measure clearance between height gauge tip and dummy shaft face.

The thickness of drive pinion height adjusting washers can be obtained from following formula: T = N - (H .01) + 3.00; where T = required
thickness of rear bearing adjusting washers in millimeters, N = clearance measured in step 4 and H = figure marked on drive pinion head. If value
signifying H is not given, regard it as zero and compute.

Value obtained from equation is required thickness of pinion height adjusting washer. If washer of required thickness is not available, select
washer whose thickness is closest to calculated value.
