IGNITION COIL DAMAGE

APPLIED MODELS:

1988 Pulsar NX SE models with CA18DE engine

SERVICE INFORMATION

Owners of some 1988 Pulsar NX SE models manufactured with the CA18DE engine may damage the ignition coil under the following conditions:

When the ignition switch is turned to the "START" position, then to the "ON" position, the engine does not start, or will not continue
running, and the switch then remains in the "ON" position for a prolonged period.

The ignition switch is in the "ACC" position then turned to the "ON" position.  For example, this may be done when the customer wants to
listen to the radio with a door open while washing the car.  The "ACC" position is not selected because a warning chime rings.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1.

Using the procedures described in the 1988 Pulsar NX Service Manual, check ignition coil operation (i.e., resistance, coil output etc.).

2.

Replace the damaged coil.

3.

Replace the ECU with the 1989 mid-year unit.

4.

After the repair, please advise the customer to avoid leaving the ignition key in the "ON" position when the engine is not running, and that the
"ACC" position should be used as described in the vehicle Owner's Manual. If the incident continues to occur, contact the FIXS Hotline for further
assistance.  In addition, if this type of incident occurs on another model year Pulsar NX, please advise the FIXS Hotline.

PARTS INFORMATION

NOTE:

The 1989 mid-year ECU is interchangeable with the 1988 mid-year ECU, and will allow the incident conditions to occur without
damaging the coil. The corresponding part numbers are shown below.
