1993-97 QUEST POWER STEERING GEAR WHINE NOISE

Vehicles built before September 15, 1996 

SERVICE INFORMATION
 
If a 1993-97 Quest exhibits a high pitched whine or whistle noise from the power steering gear and linkage (rack) when the steering wheel is turned
(usually to the right), a countermeasure power steering rack is available to reduce this incident.

This bulletin applies only to vehicles that have not experienced a power steering fluid loss.

 SERVICE PROCEDURE
 
1.

Make sure there are no leaks in the system and the reservoir is full.

 
2.

Use the following conditions to verify this incident:

^

Have the vehicle stationary.

^

Have the weight of the vehicle on the steering system.  The noise will not occur with the vehicle on a hoist.

^

Engine at idle; normal operating temperature.

^

Steering system warmed to normal operating temperature.

^

A/C and radio off.

3.

Start with the steering wheel straight.

 
4.

Turn the wheel slowly to the right, you should hear the noise.

 
5.

If you continue to turn the wheel, the noise will go away.
