SENTRA FUEL GAUGE DIAGNOSIS
APPLIED MODEL:
1991-92 Sentra (B13)
SERVICE INFORMATION
You may receive customer reports of the following fuel gauge incidents:
1.
The gauge does not read full when the tank is filled.
2.
There is too much fuel remaining in the tank when the gauge reads empty.
3.
The tank is empty before the gauge reads empty.
4.
The gauge moves down too quickly at first, then slowly through the rest of the range.
Fuel gauge operation for 1991-92 Sentra vehicles:
1.
The capacity of the fuel tank in the 91-92 Sentra is about 13.2 gallons and the gauge system is designed so that 2-3 gallons remain in the tank when
the gauge shows empty.
2.
The fuel gauge uses a damping system to prevent excess movement while accelerating, turning or slowing. However, this also slows movement of
the needle near the top of its travel during filling. It can take up to 3 minutes for the needle to reach the full mark after filling the tank, especially
when the ambient temperature is low. Any reported incidenls of "the gauge doesn't read full" must be verified after waiting 3 minutes after turning
the ignition to the "ON" position.
Use the following procedure to properly diagnose and repair vehicles with complaints about fuel gauge operation or accuracy.
DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR PROCEDURE
Remove the rear lower seat cushion from the vehicle. Remove the cover for the fuel tank sending unit. Disconnect the electrical connectors at the fuel
tank sending unit and remove the sending unit.
A.
Check for proper operation of the sending unit:
1.
Move the sending unit arm slowly from stop to stop. Ensure that the arm moves smoothly through its entire travel.
2.
Manually hold the float at the top of its travel.
