DIAGNOSIS OF SENTRA (B13) SUSPENSION STRUT NOISES

SERVICE INFORMATION:

Many of the struts returned through warranty and subsequently tested are found to be free of defects. To reduce the number of "good" parts replaced and
to increase the diagnosis accuracy, Technicians should apply the following suspension/strut noise diagnosis procedure.

There can be several sources for suspension-related noises. To competently diagnose allegedly defective front or rear shock absorber struts, it is
important to first identify and then, discriminate among the various sources of front/rear suspension noises.

Additionally, it is recommended that struts not be replaced in pairs [except, in those cases, when a part number change has occurred which identifies an
internal valving change]. Only those struts found to be defective should be replaced.

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE:

FRONT

1.

Before removing a front strut, check the following:

A.

Suspension fasteners must be properly torqued

1.

Nut on strut rod (hold rod flats); 46-53 ft.lbs.

2.

Three (3) nuts that secure the strut to the strut tower; 18-22 ft.lbs.

3.

Two (2) bolts that secure the strut clevis to the axle; 84-98 ft.lbs.

4.

Lower Control Arm Bolt; 76-90 ft.lbs.

5.

Stabilizer Bar fasteners [four (4) places]; see page FA-24 in 1992 Sentra Service Manual.

6.

Tie Rod Castle Nuts; 43-54 ft.lbs.

Spring Noise: coil-to-coil contact

C.

Interference between inner fender and spring

D.

Manual Steering Rack noise

2.

With strut assembly removed from the vehicle, verify proper installation of the gasket and thrust bearing.

3.

If none of the above conditions exist, replace the strut.

REAR
1.

Before removing the rear strut, check the following:

A.

Suspension fasteners must be properly torqued

1.

Nut on strut rod (hold rod flats); 46-53 ft.lbs.

2.

Three (3) nuts that secure the strut to the strut tower; 18-22 ft.lbs.

3.

Two (2) bolts that secure the strut clevis to the axle; 72-98 ft.lbs.

4.

Parallel link bolts; 72-87 ft.lbs.

5.

Rear bumper bolts; 22-29 ft.lbs.

6.

Rear stabilizer bar fasteners; see page RA-8 in the 1992 Sentra Service Manual
